Gunung Padang Site
The Gunung Padang Cultural Heritage Site is a National Cultural Heritage site in the form of a stepped pyramid structure, which is the largest and oldest of its kind in Indonesia. It is located in the village of Karyamukti, Campaka District, Cianjur Regency, West Java. The site was first reported by local residents in 1979 and has been researched by the National Archaeological Research Center, Bandung Archaeological Office, since the 1980s. The Directorate of Cultural Heritage and Museums, Banten Cultural Heritage Preservation Center, University of Indonesia, University of Padjajaran, and individuals interested in understanding the background of past cultural history have also been involved in the research. The stepped pyramid of Gunung Padang is one of the cultural legacies that depict the behavior of prehistoric humans around 3000-2000 years ago.
This stepped pyramid is a man-made structure made of natural stone, known as columnar jointed rock. Its unique design is built on top of a hill at an elevation of 895 meters above sea level, with columnar jointed rocks formed by natural geological processes underneath. The stepped pyramid consists of 5 terraces, starting from terrace 1 in the north to terrace 5 in the south, as of 2014.
In 2014, the Minister of Education and Culture designated the Gunung Padang Site as a National Cultural Heritage Site through Decree Number 023/M/2014. The total area of the Gunung Padang Site is 291,800 square meters, with the following boundaries: North: Cimanggu River; East: Cikuta River; South: Cikuta River, Empang Village, Cikuta Village; West: Cipanggulaan River, Cipanggulaan Village.
