History of Tanah Abang Market
This market, which has been around since the Dutch colonial era, was the idea of Yustinus Vinck. Tanah Abang Market was established with permission from General Abraham Patramini who at that time served as Governor. In 1740, the Chineezenmoord incident occurred, namely the massacre of ethnic Chinese people and the destruction of their property.

Then this market was among those that were ravaged and then burned. However, after 141 years passed from the Chineezenmoord incident, in 1881 Tanah Abang was rebuilt. Tanah Abang, which previously only served buying and selling transactions on Saturdays, in the second development, opened every Wednesday and Saturday.

Development of Tanah Abang Market
The Tanah Abang wholesale center building was initially very simple, namely just bamboo walls and planks, with a thatch roof. Initially there were 229 boards and 139 buildings made of bamboo. Around 1926 the Batavian government demolished the market and replaced it with a permanent building, namely in the form of 3 long stalls made of walls with tile roofs. Meanwhile, the front parking lot is a parking area for carriage horses and carts. Then during the Japanese colonial era, this old market barely functioned, so it became a place for homeless people to live.

Division of Tanah Abang Market Area
At the end of the colonial period, this market returned to function and in 1973 it was rejuvenated, by erecting 4 buildings, each with 4 floors. In 1975, the government recorded that there were 4,351 kiosks and 3,016 traders. The Tanah Abang wholesale center is divided into 3 trading center building areas, namely the Tanah Abang old building, Metro and AURI.

Tanah Abang's old building is divided into several blocks, namely block A, block B and block F. In the old building the stalls are in the form of kiosks. Meanwhile, AURI is divided into several blocks, namely block A, block B, block C, block D, block E, block F, block AA, block BB, block CC. In the AURI area the stalls are shophouses. As time goes by, this market building gets bigger and bigger. Likewise, the number of traders means that now it has become the wholesale center of Tanah Abang, which is called the largest wholesale market in Southeast Asia.
