Sawarna Legend
During the Dutch colonial era, the Tanjung Layar area was known as Java's Eerste Punt, which means "the first tip of the island of Java". There are also stories about Tanjung Layar Beach which are told in Sundanese chronicles and legends of the south coast.
The myth is about two giant corals that resemble boat sails. It is said that these corals are the manifestation of two forces which will later become Sangkuriang's ships.
The ship was made as a condition for Sangkuriang to marry Dayang Sumbi, who turned out to be his own biological mother. Unfortunately, Sang Hyang Widi was angry with Sangkuriang's actions in wanting to marry his own mother.
Eventually, all of the ship's equipment including both sails were destroyed. The ship is said to have been kicked north and became Tangkuban Perahu. Meanwhile, the sail was kicked to the south and is now known as Tanjung Layar.
Apart from the legend about Sangkuriang, around Tanjung Layar there is also a coral shaped like a footrest. The coral is named after the footprints of Kabayan, who is a famous Sundanese figure. Further information about Kabayan characters can be found on the Kabayan characters page.
