The Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy/Head of Tourism and Creative Economy Agency (Menparekraf/Kabaparekraf) Sandiaga Salahuddin Uno hopes that the organization of a concert by British musician, Coldplay, at the Jakarta International Stadium (JIS) on March 2, 2024, will have a positive impact on the economy of the people.
Menparekraf Sandiaga Salahuddin Uno stated in "The Weekly Brief with Sandi Uno" at the Sapta Pesona Building, Jakarta, on Monday (2/26/2024). "I appreciate because (promoter) PK Entertainment was successful with Coldplay last year. As promised at the beginning of the year, they immediately made a big impact, through the Ed Sheeran concert," said Menparekraf Sandiaga in "The Weekly Brief with Sandi Uno" at the Sapta Pesona Building, Jakarta, on Monday (2/26/2024).
The Ed Sheeran concert is expected to be attended by up to 50,000 people, so Menparekraf Sandiaga believes it can bring positive impacts to the economy sector in the country. He explained the typical spending of local tourists when attending international concerts in Indonesia. He mentioned that if the target audience for Ed Sheeran is 50 thousand visitors, then he believes the conservative direct impact could reach more than Rp100 billion.
Sandiaga mentioned that the typical spending of Indonesian tourists attending an international concert in Indonesia with up to 50,000 attendees is around Rp2.7 million, with a conservative direct impact exceeding Rp100 billion.
Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy Sandiaga Uno further explained that the Ed Sheeran concert: Mathematics Tour 2024 has also experienced a venue change from the original location at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium to Jakarta International Stadium (JIS).
The shift in venue for the Ed Sheeran concert indicates a strategic move to accommodate the large number of attendees and potentially increase the economic impact of the event on the local tourism industry. Sandiaga's insights shed light on the significant financial implications of hosting international concerts in Indonesia.
The decision to move the venue from GBK Stadium to JIS was not only due to GBK being used for the preparation of the Indonesian national team's match against Vietnam, but also to bring the iconic 360° stage sensation, which is a global standard for Ed Sheeran. This 360-degree stage is also the first of its kind at JIS.
According to the Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy, Sandiaga Uno, "This last-minute move from GBK to JIS will certainly enable an iconic 360° stage sensation."
Harry Sudarma, Co-Founder and COO of PK Entertainment, has conveyed several preparations for the upcoming concert in the following days.
Despite facing challenges due to the change in location, the advance crew has started to arrive and the 360-degree concept stage has been under construction since last week. It is indeed iconic for this global tour," said Harry.
To ensure smooth access for the audience to and from JIS, Harry explained that they have collaborated with various stakeholders such as JIExpo and Ancol to provide additional parking areas. Additionally, there will be 75 shuttle units from JIExpo and 50 shuttle units from GBK.
"So, for buyers who have purchased tickets before the venue relocation was announced and have already booked hotels near GBK and others, we will provide shuttles from GBK and collaborate with Blue Bird to offer promotions for a more comfortable commute, and the JPO at JIS from Ancol will also be activated," said Harry.
Furthermore, Harry explained that there are direct and indirect economic impacts on the organization of Ed Sheeran's concert. "Just the artist's personnel alone, there are more than 80 people, so there is a direct effect on hotels, catering, visas, so this may already be a direct impact. The indirect impact is that big-scale artists like Ed Sheeran are expected to attract not only local tourists but also foreigners," said Harry.
Meanwhile, Deputy of Tourism Products & Event Organizers at the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy, Vinsensius Jemadu, stated that the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy, together with PK Entertainment, are continuously striving to improve the quality of concert organization.
Vinsensius emphasized the importance of learning from the success story of Coldplay, pointing out the increasing quality of the promoter PK Entertainment. He highlighted the significance of focusing on the quality of event organizers and the impact they create, rather than just aiming for quantity. This shift towards emphasizing quality over quantity is a positive development that is hoped to continue in the future.
Vinsensius also mentioned that the Ed Sheeran concert, expected to draw 50 thousand attendees, is anticipated to contribute to the tourism sector and the creative economy. The target for this year is to reach 1.5 billion movements, and having 10-15 percent of international tourists attending the concert could significantly boost the economy. This strategic approach aligns with the goal of not only hosting successful events but also leveraging them for broader economic benefits.
